Dear Rotarians:

As District Governor, I wanted you to look at Vital Flight, Inc.’s 9th Annual Special Day For Special Kids held on Saturday, April 13, 2019.  As distinguished Rotarians, you are all committed to “service above self” It is in this spirit that Rotary District 6990 through its member clubs an extraordinary leadership and service opportunity to form a partnership with Vital Flight, Inc., a Florida not for profit corporation with 501(c)(3) status.

District 6990 member clubs should want to partner with Vital Flight for two reasons: First, Rotary’s guiding principles are strikingly similar to Vital Flight’s guiding principles in terms of selfless service to others; and, second, the incredible experience that other Rotary Clubs in Broward and Palm Beach have had during the years when Special Kids Day flew from the Boca Raton Airport.

Special Kids Day is currently being conducted at the Miami – Opa Locka Airport. Vital Flight needs the financial support of clubs in our district. On Special Kids Day, Vital Flight hosts children with special needs or terminal illnesses at a local airport. They are treated to a carnival inside a hangar as they await the adventure of their lives. They load these amazing kids and their families into an airplane and take them on a flight at no charge. In fact, the entire day is free.

Vital Flight is also dedicated to service and contribution. An all volunteer pilot organization, Vital Flight coordinates free air transportation to those with medical, humanitarian, or compassionate needs. Vital Flight pays no salaries or stipends and all missions are flown by pilots who donate their time, their aircraft, and their fuel to benefit those who are less fortunate.

A typical Vital Flight mission includes flying a sightless military veteran to a Veteran’s Administration Center for rehabilitation and training to live self-sufficiently without sight; or flying a woman battling cancer whose best chance for survival is a specialized treatment in another city far from home; or flying mother or father to a remote location to be with family in a time of need; or even filling an airplane with food for the holidays for the poor; or much needed and essential supplies after a natural disaster.

Why does Vital Flight do what they do? The answer lies in our mission statement: “Our passion is flying, our mission is helping people.” As much as they love to fly, they know the value of everything is measured in a willingness to share it or even give it away. This includes the ability and privilege to fly airplanes. The joy of flight has been described in books, movies, poems, and songs. The joy that comes from making a difference in the life of another human being is, as you know firsthand, indescribable.

In order to create this event, which we have done for eight consecutive years, Vital Flight needs to raise funds throughout the year and accept the services of over 100 volunteers. As a result, they have flown over 600 Special Kids and their families totally more than 2,000 passengers.

You need to experience this event up close and personal. However, you can view more information @ www.vitalflight.org under events.   Please consider this important service project event in our community by donating $1,000 to this project. Funds can be directed to District 6990 for distribution or directly to Vital Flight, Inc., 1500 SE 13th Street, Deerfield Beach, Fl 33441. In addition, Tom Powers, Chairman Emeritus of Vital Flight and Past President of the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club and Area 3 Associate Assistant Governor is willing to visit your club to speak to your members, if you so desire. He can be reached via email at www.powair@aol.com

This will help continue a truly special day for special kids as well as in serving the needs of those in our community that are less fortunate and, in turn, join us in the joy that is uniquely experienced having done for those who cannot do for themselves.

Sincerely,

Drew Monaghan

District Governor 6990
